The Problem
A homeowner in Taman Kepong Baru called Masters Aircond Service KL on a Tuesday afternoon in a panic. The master bedroom aircond — a Midea MSAG-13CRN8 1.5HP non-inverter unit — had suddenly stopped blowing cold air. The indoor fan was running normally, but the air coming out was room temperature. The outdoor unit was completely silent.
With temperatures hitting 35°C outside and a newborn baby at home, the homeowner needed an urgent same-day aircond repair. We dispatched a technician within 2 hours of the call.
Our Assessment
Upon arrival at the double-storey terrace house in Kepong, our technician ran through the standard diagnostic checklist:
- Indoor unit — fan motor working, no error codes on display, filters clean (recently serviced)
- Outdoor unit — compressor not starting, fan motor not spinning, no humming sound at all
- Electrical check — power supply reaching outdoor unit confirmed with multimeter (230V AC)
- Capacitor test — the dual-run capacitor (35+5µF) tested at only 8µF on the compressor side — well below the minimum threshold
The diagnosis was clear: a failed compressor capacitor. The capacitor is responsible for providing the initial electrical boost to start the compressor motor. When it degrades, the compressor simply cannot start — even though power is flowing normally. This is one of the most common aircond repair issues we see, and fortunately one of the most affordable to fix.
Work Timeline
Step 1: Diagnosis & Confirmation
Isolated the outdoor unit power supply, discharged the old capacitor safely, and confirmed the failure with a capacitance meter reading of 8µF (should be 35µF).
Step 2: Capacitor Replacement
Replaced the failed dual-run capacitor with a new 35+5µF 440VAC capacitor — an exact match for the Midea MSAG series. We carry common capacitor sizes in our service van for same-day repairs.
Step 3: Compressor Start Test
Restored power and the compressor started immediately with a healthy hum. Measured starting current at 6.2A — within the normal 5.5–7A range for this model.
Step 4: Cooling Performance Check
Ran the unit for 20 minutes and measured supply air temperature at 14°C — excellent cooling for a 1.5HP unit. Checked refrigerant pressure at 65 PSI on low side — within spec, no gas leak.

Lessons & Advice
Capacitor failure is the single most common cause of "aircond blowing but not cold" complaints we receive at Masters Aircond Service KL. The good news: it's a quick, affordable fix — typically RM150–250 depending on the capacitor rating and brand. The bad news: if left unaddressed and someone keeps trying to turn the unit on, it can damage the compressor winding — turning a RM180 repair into a RM1,500+ compressor replacement.
If your outdoor unit is silent but the indoor fan works fine, stop running the aircond and call a technician immediately. Don't keep switching it on and off hoping it'll start — each failed start attempt strains the compressor.
For units older than 5 years, consider a preventive capacitor replacement during your next gas top-up or servicing appointment. A new capacitor costs less than RM50 in parts — cheap insurance against an emergency breakdown on the hottest day of the year.
