Split Unit Installation at Bangsar South Studio Apartment

The Problem

A young professional who had just moved into a 550-sqft studio apartment at The Horizon Residences in Bangsar South needed aircond installation. The unit was a bare shell — no airconds included by the developer. With KL's afternoon heat regularly exceeding 34°C, the apartment was practically unlivable without cooling.

The challenge was space. A 550-sqft studio has very limited wall space for indoor units, and the outdoor ledge at The Horizon only accommodates 2 condensers with tight clearance. The owner had purchased 2 Daikin FTKF25B 1.0HP inverter units — one for the bedroom partition and one for the living/dining area — and needed a clean, professional aircond installation that wouldn't clutter the compact space.

Our Assessment

We visited the studio for a site survey and identified the key considerations:

• Bedroom unit placement — only one viable wall position above the bed's headboard. The piping point was pre-hacked on the adjacent wall, requiring a short 90-degree turn in the trunking
• Living area unit placement — mounted above the sliding balcony door would provide the best airflow coverage, but the piping run to the outdoor ledge would be 22ft — longer than standard
• Outdoor ledge — space for exactly 2 condensers with 50cm spacing. Brackets needed to be stainless steel (condo management requirement)
• Electrical — the developer had provided 13A sockets for both indoor points and a 20A outdoor breaker. No additional wiring needed

The longer piping run for the living area unit would add approximately RM140 to the standard installation cost, but we confirmed it was well within the maximum 25ft limit for 1.0HP units.

Studio apartments require careful planning because every centimetre matters. The indoor unit placement, trunking route, and even the colour of the trunking can make the difference between a clean, professional finish and an eyesore. Always book a site survey before purchasing your units — we've seen cases where owners bought 1.5HP units for rooms that only had space for a 1.0HP bracket position.

For studios and small condos in Bangsar South, 1.0HP inverter units are usually the sweet spot.
